Changing seasons also means changing up your skincare. As the weather gets cooler, your skin faces the challenge of protecting its barrier from dryness, dullness, and sensitivity. This can add a challenge to what you’re already treating your skin for. So it’s important to adjust appropriately to the season.
Let’s first start with barrier protection, this should be your first step in your skincare routine for colder months. Cold air and low humidity, combined with indoor heating, can increase transepidermal water loss. This can cause flakiness and tightness in your skin. Protecting and nurturing your skin barrier is the most important step. It determines if the subsequent steps are effective or not.
What to look for and avoid:
- Choose a moisturizer that is rich in ceramides and fatty acids.
- Next, use a cleanser that is non-stripping (avoiding high alcohol content)
- Follow up with a rich night time moisturizer or balm to seal hydration in overnight
- if your skin is already stressed, avoid layering too many products especially products that can be activating or irritating.
- When choosing a serum, look for something hydrating (for example, hyaluronic acid)
- Follow a schedule if you are trying to target key issues with your skin such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, etc.

Depending on your skin needs, designating a scheduled routine can get you to your goal faster.
I always try to learn what works best for my skin. I do this through research. This is especially important as I get older. It’s even more crucial now that I am a mother. A lot of things need to be factored into your skincare routine. You must consider not just what products you use, but also how much sleep you get. Additionally, consider what you eat, your exercise habits, and your environment.
